A former Marv's Meats butcher who lost his job to the Merchant of Vino/Whole Foods Markets buyout has opened his own shop at South Main Market. Scott Staebler bought the Butcher Block from Ron Tennyson in February; on March 1, he reopened under the name Prime Cuts.

"I like fish," says a friend of mine, "but I don't know what to, well, do with it."

he's not alone. Mike Monahan, of Monahan's Seafood Market, says that he hears the same thing from customers almost every day.

hen the Tam and Yue families opened Great Lake Chinese Seafood Restaurant on Carpenter Road seven years ago, they wanted to introduce Ann Arbor to what they considered authentic Chinese cuisine–not the Americanized deep-fried meats and sticky sweet-and-sour sauces that, they lament, are typical of local takeout. Now they’re opening an Asian supermarket for much the same reason. "We want to tell more about our food and culture to Western people," says Kwok Tam, "and we want to teach them how to cook at home."
