n general, I don't bother to write about books which I don't enjoy. This is partially because I was raised in the "if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all" school. Perhaps to an even larger degree, it's because I simply don't finish books which I don't enjoy. Life is far too short to fight my way through boring, or ill-written, or just plain stupid books. So don't expect you'll ever read this column and hear me ranting over some pathetic book--I have better things to do with my time.

his self-published cookbook is funny, informative and packed with recipes. The recipes have names like The Rice is Right and Omelettel Bit Country. And cartoons are strewn throughout. There are also health, fitness and nutrition factoids everywhere. My favorites are little boxes which show how much of a low fat food is the equivalent of a high fat food. For example, you have to eat 110 oranges to equal just 2 tablespoons of butter.

  Part cookbook, part cheerleader, this cookbook urges you to start living healthy.
